It's probably nothing new; Charles Dickens found it out, I'm sure.

Serialized novels are different from read-all-at-once novels, As DF said, for example, you can't read ahead.

The problem with taking a novel meant for reading all at once, and serializing it, is that sometimes a chapter doesn't work very well that way.

For example, after I read Chapter 4, I was feeling very unsatisfied. It wasn't as if nothing had happened in the chapter, because a lot did. However, there wasn't much progress in the plot.

Then I realized that, with a book that interests me, I wouldn't think of sitting down and reading one chapter, especially one near the beginning of the book. I would cruise through several, using the momentum of the plot from other chapters to get through the places where no plot development happens.

When I have to wait a week, it doesn't work that way. The suspense doesn't carry you that long. I guess that means that if you were writing a book with the intention of serializing it, the individual chapters would be more episodic, more like individual short stories.

I'm planning to publish one of my own novels serially on the internet, so this is very helpful to me. Keep at it!

Thanks,

GordonAirborn Press / Gordon Longhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02782339726027069040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28875475.post-1155586862418243852006-08-14T20:21:00.000+00:002006-08-14T20:21:00.000+00:00The story continues to get more intriguing. You can't read ahead.

It's all very inviting, but into what we don't know yet. I found the sequence with Sarah dancing extremely important. In the moment, Jesse is won over to her side through nonverbal means, in contrast to the arguing, which seemed to be getting nowhere. All the layers of the erotic, the divine, the liturgical, the magical, lie densely one on top the other. But then the moment's over, and they seem to be back to square one, emphasis on the "seem."

What does this seqeuence mean for the rest of the book? Anything? Everything? We'll see.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28875475.post-1155397540621265422006-08-12T15:45:00.000+00:002006-08-12T15:45:00.000+00:00Hi lee, still reading here and still enjoying the ...Hi lee, still reading here and still enjoying the lyricism that you've built into the story. I like the way the realtionship between the two characters keeps changing - it's a kind of verbal spurring. And that scene in chapter three where they witnessed the bullying was very exciting.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28875475.post-1155323397265330242006-08-11T19:09:00.000+00:002006-08-11T19:09:00.000+00:00Absolutely beautiful.
